Sets Bloch-vector $\pvec{k}_{\mathrm{B}}$ as needed to specify the Bloch-periodicity for periodic geometries. For the discussion of periodic boundary conditions see here in the section Electromagnetics.

For two-dimensional $z$ -invariant problems the third component $k_z$ has the meaning of a wavenumber as detailed here in the parent section.

For cylindrically symmetric problems the third component is the angular, integer wavenumber $n_\varphi$ , for details see here.
